Getting the best from seasonal, relief and casual staff

Set Up Your Staff For Success

As workloads increase across drilling, grazing and early silage, many farms bring in additional help. Whether it’s relief milkers, tractor drivers or general farm support, seasonal and casual staff can make a significant difference, but only if they are set up properly from the start.

Too often, farms assume short-term workers will “pick things up as they go”. In reality, lack of clarity leads to mistakes, frustration and inefficiency. Even experienced workers need to understand how your farm operates — your standards, routines, and expectations.

A simple, structured induction is one of the most valuable tools you have. This doesn’t need to be complicated. A clear explanation of daily routines, key safety points, who to report to and what good looks like in the role can dramatically improve performance from day one.

For dairy farms, consistency is critical. Milking routines, hygiene standards and animal handling must be clearly communicated. For arable and mixed farms, machinery use, field protocols and job priorities need to be understood early.

Just as importantly, short-term staff should feel part of the team. A quick check-in, clear feedback and basic respect go a long way. People who feel valued are more likely to take responsibility, work carefully and return in future seasons.

Getting this right turns temporary labour into a reliable asset rather than a constant risk.
