Ensuring A Successful Harvest

Harvest is one of the busiest and most demanding times of the farming calendar. Long days, changing weather, tight deadlines and expensive machinery all create pressure. While much attention is given to logistics and planning, one of the biggest influences on a successful harvest is often overlooked – communication.

When the pace increases, conversations tend to become shorter. Instructions are given quickly, assumptions are made, and people often move from one task straight to the next without checking understanding. It is during these periods that mistakes, frustration and avoidable accidents are most likely to occur.

A five-minute briefing at the start of each day can make a remarkable difference. Discuss the weather forecast, priorities for the day, any machinery issues, expected deliveries and who is responsible for each task. Just as importantly, give people the opportunity to ask questions or raise concerns before they head out.

Good communication is not simply about giving instructions. It is also about listening. If a trailer driver spots a safety issue or a combine operator notices a recurring problem, creating an environment where people feel comfortable speaking up helps address issues before they become costly.

For farms that rely on family members, permanent employees, and seasonal staff working together, clear communication also helps everyone understand how their role contributes to the wider operation. It reduces duplication, prevents misunderstandings and keeps the team focused on the same objectives.

Harvest will always be demanding, but it doesn't have to be chaotic. Strong communication creates calmer teams, safer working practices and better results when the pressure is at its greatest.
